book 19
the end of mr. y, scarlett thomas
rating:
still processing
i've waited a few days to write this one up, but i still haven't figured out quite what i want to say, so i'll just go ahead. okay, so ariel is a grad student into literature and science, working on a phd project about thought experiments. she's particularly into this author, thomas lumas. one day, in a secondhand bookstore, she finds a copy of a legendary book that lumas wrote, the titular end of mr. y. the book is allegedly cursed. there are only one or two known copies, and everyone who's ever read it has disappeared. but she gets it and she reads it and then things get really weird.
this book is like what happens to me when i fall asleep reading, usually school stuff, and i have these vivid waking dreams that i'm still reading, to the point that i wake up and feel like i've fully processed the information. but of course, i haven't. do you know what i mean?
anyway, i was really into it intermittently. like at the beginning and for a big 250-page chunk in the middle. the end was a little much for me, but i still enjoyed it overall. i think.
